[Julie Dupuis:]

If you would have asked me when I was younger, I never would have said, you're going to work with transportation of dangerous goods or with Transport Canada. Just kind of led me to that. Life led me to that role, and I'm happy that I'm in it right now.

I'm Julie Dupuis, I work for Transport Canada as a Remedial Measures Specialist. I grew up in a small coastal town in New Brunswick, where we were always outside. The sea and the people around in Atlantic Canada, you know, we're all friendly.

Growing up I was always interested in nature and the environment and that's what led me to university to study environmental science. Finishing up my masters, there was an opportunity to do an internship with Transport Canada at hangar 258 in Ottawa to do environmental protection work. I jumped on that opportunity, and then from then I just stayed with Transport Canada because there was always a good opportunity for me waiting. So, I always jumped on those opportunities, and then eventually, I ended up back in the region that I wanted to work in. And in transportation of dangerous goods, where we actually have an impact on public safety and mitigating the effects of an incident when it does happen. So, I'm not cleaning up, but I'm preventing the incident to have greater impact on the environment and keep the public safe at the same time.

My area of work is the whole Atlantic Canada. I will go on site in Newfoundland, P.E.I., Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. I am very much an East-coaster, yes. For me it’s proximity to family and friends and the sense of, we have close-knit communities.

We're very fortunate at transport that there is a good work life balance. That's one of the things when I'm choosing a career, I wanted that work life balance to be able to prioritize, at times, your job, but also when you have to, you can prioritize your family as well.

I don't want to be bored. I want to keep on being challenged because that's where you grow as a person. That's the beauty with Transport Canada, they invest in their people.

This job and this department really lets you develop your career, gives you the opportunities if you want to seize them.
