Scope of the standard

The CSA B620 standard sets out the requirements for design, construction, certification, assembly, modification, repair, testing, inspection, periodic re-testing, maintenance, and marking of highway tanks (tank trucks) and TC portable tanks for the transportation of dangerous goods. The standard also prescribes requirements for registration by Transport Canada of facilities, design review agencies, design engineers and training organizations for conducting the activities within the scope of the standard.

Finding the standard in the TDG Regulations

Section 5.10 of the TDG Regulations specifies that a means of containment in accordance with CSA B622 standard is a permitted container for the transport of dangerous goods in Class 2 by road or by ship while Section 5.14 of the TDG Regulations specifies that a means of containment in accordance with CSA B621 standard is a permitted container for the transport of dangerous goods in Class 3, 4, 5, 6.1, 8 and 9, by road or by ship. Both CSA CSA B622 and CSA CSA B621 invoke CSA B620 in relation to the design, construction, certification, assembly, modification, repair, testing, inspection, periodic re-testing, maintenance, and marking of highway tanks (tank trucks and trailers) and TC portable tanks. CSA B626 invokes CSA B620 for the certification, assembly, marking, modification, repair, testing, inspection and periodic retesting, maintenance, and identification of TC 44 portable tanks.

Highway tanks specifications

Highway tanks line drawings and general descriptions of each tank specification and the dangerous goods for which they are commonly used are provided. Full information on these tanks can be found in Clause 5 of CSA B620, and in the CSA B622 standard and CSA B621 standard standards.

TC portable tanks specifications

TC portable tanks line drawings and general descriptions of each tank specification and the dangerous goods for which they are commonly used are provided. Full information on these tanks can be found in Clause 6 of the CSA B620, and in the CSA B622 standard and CSA B621 standard standards.

Significant changes from CSA B620-14, CSA B621-14 & CSA B622-14 to CSA B620:20, CSA B621:20 & CSA B622:20

A summary of the most significant changes to the standards that are applicable to highway tank and TC portable tank manufacturers, and any facility wishing to repair, modify, assemble, test or inspect such tanks is provided. With this amendment, the Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Regulations now dynamically reference the CSA B620, CSA B621 standard and CSA B622 standard standards. This allows stakeholders to use the most recent versions of these safety standards. Not all changes to the standards are covered here.
