More funding for Indigenous Community Boat Volunteer Program

On February 23, 2024, the Canadian Coast Guard announced funding over $3.6 million to nine additional communities under the Indigenous Community Boat Volunteer Program.

At the heart of this initiative lies a profound recognition of the invaluable role Indigenous and coastal communities play in safeguarding our oceans and waterways. Often, they brave treacherous waters to come to the aid of those in need. By investing in their capacity and expertise, we not only enhance marine safety but also honour their stewardship of these waters for generations to come.

The Indigenous Community Boat Volunteer Program is more than just a financial investment; it represents a commitment to reconciliation and partnership-building. By harnessing the rich marine knowledge of Indigenous communities, we pave the way for a safer and cleaner future for all.

Initially launched in 2017 as part of the Oceans Protection Plan, this program funding allows more Indigenous coastal communities to buy boats and related marine safety equipment. To date, 49 Indigenous coastal communities and organizations have received over $15.6 million in funding.
