Micro Utility Devices - Observations from Transport Canada’s Winter 2022 Urban Trial

This report begins with an overview of MUDs, finding that its technical development is far from being truly autonomous, and they present concerns such as pedestrian and traffic safety, legal liability, and data privacy. The report then provides an overview of the observations and quantitative results of the Innovation Centre’s Winter 2022 MUD trial of Sidewalk Robotics' snow piling robots in Ottawa, where base case tests were successful overall while the edge case tests delivered mixed results. The report ends with lessons learned from the tests and several recommendations for future technological and regulatory development.
