Enabling bold and innovative transportation solutions that enhance the safety, security, efficiency, and environmental performance of transportation in Canada.
The Innovation Centre is a transportation innovation research, development and deployment (RD&D) organization that supports emerging transportation technologies to help ensure Canadians can benefit from a safe, secure, clean, and integrated transportation system.

Support for transportation innovation
The pace of transportation innovation is accelerating quickly. To make the most of their benefits and lessen their risks, the Government of Canada needs to get ready for emerging and disruptive transportation technologies.
To prepare for these technologies, we are:
- Transforming our state-of-the-art Motor Vehicle Test Centre in Blainville, Quebec
- Partnering with government, industry and academia in new ways
- Helping to advance emerging transportation technologies through RD&D
- Building on federal innovation funding programs, such as:

Decreasing the impact of transportation on the environment
Decreasing the impact of transportation on the environment
Less environmental impact
We're researching technology that can help decrease the environmental impact of transportation. For example, we're looking at technology to help reduce:
- underwater vessel noise
- waste
- transportation emissions
To do this, we're partnering with programs that are part of the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change, like the ecoTECHNOLOGY for Vehicles Program (eTV). We're also taking part in government-wide initiatives like the Oceans Protection Plan, and implementing the Quiet Vessel Initiative to look at noise reducing technologies and designs for vessels.
In addition, through the Zero Emission Trucking Program (ZETP), we are contributing to accelerate the safe deployment of Medium- and Heavy-Duty Zero Emission Vehicles (MHZEV) on Canadian roads.
Improving the safety and security of transportation
Improving the safety and security of transportation
Improved safety and security
We are helping to prepare Canada for the transportation system of the future. How? We are:
- Assessing how vehicle automation will impact drivers and road safety
- Evaluating new products and equipment for de-icing and anti-icing aircrafts
- Researching vehicle crash avoidance
- Researching landslides to improve railway safety
- Continuing research through the Railway Ground Hazard Research Program
- Getting ready for larger numbers of connected and automated vehicles through the Program to Advance Connectivity and Automation in the Transportation System (ACATS)

More efficiency
We are assessing how connectivity, automation and other new technologies could make Canada’s transportation system more efficient. We’re working with key programs that support transportation technologies, such as our:
- ecoTECHNOLOGY for Vehicles Program (eTV)
- Program to Advance Connectivity and Automation in the Transportation System (ACATS)
We are also looking at technologies that could make inspections more efficient and help to monitor the health of Canada’s critical transportation infrastructure (for example, bridges and rail lines). To help us with this work, we're looking at a range of new technologies, such as remote satellite infrastructure modelling and advanced sensors.
