Subject: Servicing of Marine Abandonment Immersion Suit System by Authorized Personnel

This Bulletin has been replaced by Bulletin No. 11/2000.

It has come to our attention that Marine Abandonment Immersion Suit Systems have been serviced, in some cases, by unauthorized personnel. The purpose of this bulletin is to remind and advise Masters and Operators of vessels that any maintenance shall be conducted by:

  • the manufacturer of the approved suit system;

  • an agent authorized by the manufacturer; or,

  • in the event that the manufacturer has ceased production and is no longer in business, any other manufacturer of an approved suit system who can demonstrate that they are capable of undertaking such maintenance to the satisfaction of the approval authority (Transport Canada).

The Transport Canada approval of a repaired, recovered or altered suit system shall only remain in effect when the repairs, recovering or alterations are done solely by the manufacturer, or an agent appointed by the manufacturer, and it has been inspected as per Appendix C of CAN/CGSB-65.16-M89 Standard for Marine Abandonment Immersion Suit Systems.

Any suit systems that have been repaired by non authorized personnel, must be submitted for inspection by the manufacturer or its authorized agent in order to ascertain that they are still acceptable.
