Bulletin No.: 09/1993

Date (Y-M-D): 1993-07-06

Subject: Recommended Stowage of Throw-Over Type Inflatable Liferafts

This Bulletin has been replaced by Bulletin No. 07/2007.

The following are recommendations to ship Masters, mariners and shipowners concerning the stowage of inflatable liferafts.

  1. Liferafts should be stowed in such a manner that, for launching, they are not required to be lifted more than 1 to 1.5 metres from their cradles and at no time should it be necessary to lift a liferaft over one's head.
  2. Liferafts should be stowed in such a location, unless launching arrangements are provided, so that when lifted from their cradles and moved over the ship side railing or bulwark they fall directly overboard.
  3. A requirement that liferafts be capable of being readily transferred for launching on either side of the ship should be interpreted as meaning that they be stowed in a position providing unimpeded transfer to either side of the vessel at a single open deck level.
  4. When launching ramps are used to assist in the deployment of liferafts, these ramps should be declined significantly to the horizontal so that their efficiency is not adversely affected by an unfavourable 20o list of the vessel.
  5. Mariners operating in conditions of potential icing are reminded to pay particular attention to the operational readiness of their survival appliances at all times.
