Subject: Retrofitting of Locator Lights

The purpose of this Ship Safety Bulletin is to draw to your attention that life jackets of only Classes I, IX, X and XI vessels under Life Saving Equipment Regulations are required to be fitted with locator lights and they must comply with Section 6.1 by 27 April 1997.

The following constitute one acceptable way under Schedule XI, of retrofitting locator lights to existing jackets:

  1. A length of orange, yellow or red webbing 50 mm wide, should be wrapped around the shoulder with the lamp held between the overlap and firmly secured by closing devices on each side of the lamp.
  2. The webbing is to meet the requirements of CGSB Standard, CAN/CGSB-65.19-M89. Unstabilized polypropylene cannot be used for this purpose. The cut ends shall be properly burnt and finished to avoid becoming frayed.

Any other suggestion should be submitted with these samples to AMBC-B for review and acceptance before any general retrofitting is undertaken.
