Marine Security Initiatives
Emerging Issues
As Chair of the Interdepartmental Marine Security Working Group (IMSWG), Transport Canada coordinates the Government of Canada’s overall marine security policy.
Many other federal departments and agencies engage in marine security activities in their day-to-day operations, as well. For example,
- The Department of National Defence (particularly the Navy);
- Royal Canadian Mounted Police;
- Canada Border Services Agency; and,
- Canadian Coast Guard.
The Canada Port Authorities, which own and operate Canada’s major ports, as well as private sector owners and operators, must ensure the security of their facilities under Transport Canada’s regulatory requirements.
The Canada Port Authorities include:
- Belledune Port Authority
- Halifax Port Authority
- Hamilton Port Authority
- Montreal Port Authority
- Nanaimo Port Authority
- Oshawa Harbour Commission
- Port Alberni Port Authority
- Prince Rupert Port Authority
- Quebec Port Authority
- Saint John Port Authority
- St. John's Port Authority
- Saguenay Port Authority
- Sept-Iles Port Authority
- Toronto Port Authority
- Trois-Rivieres Port Authority
- Thunder Bay Port Authority
- Windsor Port Authority
- Vancouver Fraser Port Authority
