About the Commemorative Project Fund

This is a new grant and contribution funding program intended to commemorate the victims of the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 tragedy. The Commemorative Project stream will provide grant funding for youth-focused, environmental, humanitarian, and/or community-based projects in commemoration of victims of the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 tragedy.

This will fund projects administered by not-for-profit organizations who undertake environmental or humanitarian projects for which a commemorative link could be made with the victims and their families. Funds would go to Canadian non-profits operating a project in Canada or in Africa, recognizing the location of the tragedy.

Commemorative Project Objectives

The overall objective of the Commemoration Fund is to honour and preserve the memory of the victims in a visible and meaningful way and to support causes aligned with the interests and passions of the victims for environmental and humanitarian causes.

This will fund projects in Canada or in Africa that:

  • align with the interests of victims
  • are youth-focused or led, community-based, humanitarian and/or environmental focused and
  • fund youth internship program or, activities which improve the lives of youth from vulnerable populations

Available funding

The total amount of funding available for the Commemoration Fund is $5 million over five years. Transport Canada intends to provide $2.5 million to the commemorative project fund over five years or depending on project timeline.

Stacking limits

The stacking limit establishes a maximum level of total Canadian government funding that is allowed for any activity, project, or initiative of a recipient.

The maximum level of total Canadian government funding under the Commemoration Fund (municipal, provincial, territorial, and federal) authorized by these program terms and conditions will not exceed one hundred percent (100%) of total eligible expenditures. If actual total government assistance to a recipient exceeds the stacking limit, Transport Canada will adjust its level of assistance and seek reimbursement.
