The application for authorization of the Lac-Mégantic rail bypass project will be filed with the Canadian Transportation Agency in accordance with section 98 of the Canada Transportation Act. This section states that, upon application by the railway company, the Agency may approve the construction of a railway line if it determines that the proposed location is suitable when considering railway service and operational requirements, as well as the interests of the communities, individuals and groups that will be affected by the railway line.
Before the construction of the rail bypass can begin, a number of regulatory steps must be taken, including approval by the Agency.
