Safety 1st Combination Child Restraint System & High-back Booster Cushion 02-64C SAL

Dates of Manufacture:
June 7 to July 12, 2002

Number of Units:
2,500

Problem:
One of the English language Statement of Compliance Labels (4359-4520) for the booster cushion portion of the combination Child Restraint System has an incorrect weight recommendation of 30 to 100 lbs. The correct weight range is between 18 and 45 kg (40 and 100 lbs). This label also does not state the weight in kilograms.

Corrective Action:
Label 4359-4520 should be removed from the car seat. The remaining English language labels have the correct weight range. The company has posted a Public Notice on its web site at www.djgusa.com under the heading of "Canadian Safety Notices", identifying the corrective action. Alternatively, consumers owning one of the affected units can contact the Dorel Juvenile Products Customer Service department at 1-800-536-1090 for help to identify the erroneous label.

Geographic Distribution:
All across Canada

Safety Risk:
The manufacturer and importer indicate that the safety risk is small because the proper weight range is provided on the other labels on the seat and in the instruction manual. Secondly, the booster seat was designed for the US market, which allows use of a high-back booster seat for a child in a weight range between 13.6 and 45 kg (30 and 100 lbs), with a vehicle lap and shoulder belt assembly. The applicable Canadian safety regulations specify the minimum weight for a child on a booster seat be 18 kg (40 lbs).

Background and Company Action:
The company was notified by Transport Canada of the label problem regarding the incorrect weight range. The manufacturer immediately initiated an investigation into its inventory and determined that an incorrect American label had been applied to the Canadian product. A Public Notice has been issued by the company through the Canada Newswire Service. In addition, they are posting the Public Notice on the Dorel Juvenile Group web site.

Consumer Recourse:
Label 4359-4520 should be removed from the car seat. Consumers can access the company web site at www.djgusa.com under the heading "Canadian Safety Notices" to obtain information on the corrective action. Alternatively, consumers owning one of the affected units can contact the Dorel Juvenile Products Customer Service department at 1-800-536-1090 for help in identifying the erroneous label. The booster seats are not to be returned to the retailer.
