Issue:
Transport Canada and Orbit Baby, Inc. are informing the public that G3 Infant Car Seats made between December 2013 and December 2016 do not comply with the Motor Vehicle Restraint Systems and Booster Seats Safety Regulations. Specifically, these infant car seats do not meet the dynamic testing requirements when used without the base. These seats also do not conform to the prescribed label permanency requirements.
Safety Risk:
Regulations set forth by Transport Canada require infant car seats to undergo simulated frontal impact tests and, among other things, should not experience separation of any load-bearing structural element during the tests. If a car seat does not meet this requirement, there is an increased risk of injury in the event of a vehicle collision. The infant car seat in question does not meet the dynamic test requirements set forth by Transport Canada when used with the vehicle seat belt only (without base configuration) due to a complete separation of the side handle. Furthermore, a label on the infant car seat which contains warnings and other important safety information was not permanently affixed according to Transport Canada and, if removed, could lead to improper use of the seat.
Company Action:
Transport Canada’s compliance inspection and testing program uncovered the non-compliance conditions. Orbit Baby has stopped the sale of the G3 Infant Car Seat in Canada. Orbit Baby will create an addendum to the instruction manual and provide two new stickers that will be affixed to the seat, informing consumers to only use the infant car seat with the base.
Additionally, Orbit Baby will notify all registered consumers who own affected product of the issue and will provide them with an addendum to the instruction manual, two new stickers for the product, and a set of four stickers that meet Transport Canada’s permanency requirements.
Consumer Recourse:
Consumers affected by this notice should contact Orbit Baby as soon as possible to obtain the addendum to the instruction manual and adhesive labels.
All non-registered consumers or consumers who have moved are encouraged to contact Orbit Baby by email or by phone for the addendum to the instruction manual and adhesive labels. The affected seats should not be returned to retailers or the company.
