UPPAbaby MESA – incorrect handle position on labelling

Issue:

Transport Canada and 5514 Km wish to inform the public of a non-compliance involving certain UPPAbaby MESA infant car seats (within the model numbers listed above). The affected infant car seats have an installation diagram label at the belt path that incorrectly shows the position of the carry handle when the car seat is installed in a vehicle.  The carry handle must be in the forward “vehicle use” position when installed in a vehicle, not in the recline position, as shown on the incorrect product label. This label does not conform to the labelling requirements indicated in the Motor Vehicle Restraint Systems and Booster Seats Safety Regulations.

Notes:

1. There is only one product label with the incorrect diagram (see Figure 1, below).
2. The warnings on the seat and the two labels on the carrier fabric (on both sides of the seating surface) correctly explain how to position the carry handle (see Figures 1 and 2, below).

Safety Risk:

Transport Canada and 5514 Km are concerned that some consumers may incorrectly position the carry handle when installing the car seat in their vehicle, which could put the child occupant at a higher risk of injury in the event of a vehicle collision. More specifically, the rebound of the child can be affected by the carry handle position and rebound is regulated to improve protection of the child’s head.

Note: There is no safety risk if the carry handle is used in the correct position (forward, “vehicle use position”).

Company Action:

5514 Km:

• Has corrected the label on all car seats manufactured after March 21st, 2017.
• Will provide corrected labels to consumers with car seats manufactured on or before March 21st, 2017 upon request.
• Is notifying all registered Canadian consumers with affected models.

Transport Canada and 5514 Km are advising consumers of this non-compliance to ensure accurate use.

To date, there have been no reported cases of injuries related to the incorrect positioning of the carry handle.

Consumer Recourse:

Parents and caregivers can continue to use the seats safely, provided they follow the instructions in the instruction manual, warning label, and the two labels on the carrier fabric (shown in Figure 2, above). Corrected labels are available by contacting UPPAbaby Consumer Experience Group at https://uppababy.com/ca/support/ .

Consumers should ONLY use the forward “vehicle-use” position when installing their car seat in a vehicle.

Consumers should disregard the label at the belt path (see Figure 3 below) on how to position the carry handle. Consumers who have the correct label (see Figure 4 below) may disregard this notice.

 

If parents or consumers have lost or misplaced their instruction manual, they should contact the UPPAbaby Consumer Experience Group at https://uppababy.com/ca/support/ to receive a replacement. The affected car seats should not be returned to the retailer.
