Canada's Zero-Emission vehicle sales targets

Canada is committed to decarbonizing the country's transportation sector and becoming a global leader in zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). In the last few years, we have seen a steady growth of Canada’s ZEV market share. Several federal, provincial, and territorial government actions are helping to drive this transition, including through regulations, purchase incentives, and investments in charging infrastructure. Based on Transport Canada’s analysis of data acquired from S&P Global Mobility, ZEVs reached 11.7% market share of light duty vehicle sales in Canada in 2023, up from 8.9% in 2022, 5.6% in 2021, 3.8% in 2020, and 3.1% in 2019. ZEVs represented about 13.7% of total LDV sales in July 2024, up from 11.8% ZEV market share in July 2023.

To help decarbonize the transportation sector, we need to accelerate the adoption of ZEVs. That is why the Government of Canada committed to achieve 100% zero-emission vehicle sales by 2035 for all new light -duty vehicles, including interim targets of at least 20% by 2026 and at least 60% by 2030, as announced in Canada's 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan. These targets have been incorporated into Canada’s Electric Vehicle Availability Standard, which was finalized in December 2023. The Government of Canada is also investing to make zero-emission vehicles more affordable and charging stations more accessible, which will also help support meeting these ambitious ZEV sales targets.

Please note Transport Canada is in the process updating its projections for ZEV sales and stock to reflect the final regulations.
