So we know that SMS is a management system that supports the safety decision-making process by industry, such as airports and airlines.

For example, an airline employee may identify and record a safety hazard to improve performance.

SSP is a management system that supports the safety decision making process by the State (Canada).

For example, based on performance data collected, the State may change regulations to improve safety.

SMS is a part of SSP: Annex 19 - Chapter 4
Companies have to set-up their SMS so that it is acceptable to authorities; and their SMS must:

  • Identify safety hazards
  • Fix any problems so that they stay within agreed safety guidelines
  • Try to continuously improve safety performance; and their SMS
