About the airport

Churchill Airport is located in northern Manitoba, on the west shore of Hudson Bay, approximately 110 kilometres (68 miles) from the Manitoba–Nunavut border. The airport serves the town of Churchill and the surrounding Kivalliq Region of Nunavut.

In 1942, the United States Air Force – with approval from the Government of Canada, built the airport and supporting infrastructure, which became Fort Churchill. Fort Churchill closed in 1980 but the airport remained operational and continues to this day to be owned and operated by Transport Canada. The airport is designated as a remote airport under the National Airports Policy.
