Fee: $110
If you acquire an aircraft that has been registered, you must transfer ownership to you. This means re-registering the aircraft in your name.
What you need before you start
Before transferring ownership of the aircraft, you must have:
- the certificate of registration you received from the previous owner
- proof of ownership showing continuity of ownership from the previous owner to you (for example, a bill of sale)
How to apply
- Complete the application on the certificate of registration you received from the previous owner
- Fill out the appropriate form:
- Application for Registration of Aircraft [PDF, 1.03 MB]
- Application for Registration of Ultra-light or Advanced Ultra-light Aeroplanes [PDF, 630 KB]
- Attach other required (and relevant) documents:
- proof of ownership
- for an advanced ultra-light aeroplane, a completed Fit to Fly form
- Enclose the aircraft registration fee of $110, payable to the Receiver General for Canada
- Mail your application package to the Civil Aviation office in your region
Interim certificate of registration
While you wait for your aircraft to be re-registered, you can activate an interim certificate of registration. To do this:
- Fill out your name, address, and date of custody and control information on the certificate of registration you received from the previous owner
- Keep the document on the aircraft
Validity period
The interim certificate is valid until the earliest of the following days:
- the last day of the 3-month period following the sale of the aircraft by the previous owner
- the day on which there is another transfer of custody and control
- the day on which you receive a new certificate of registration
Note: if you have an old version of the certificate of registration, without the portion used for the interim certificate, you can’t use the procedure described here. You must wait until you get your new certificate.
