Transport Canada is proposing to update six Technical Standards Documents (TSD) referenced in the Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations (MVSR). The documents are on braking and electronic stability control standards for different types of vehicles.
The proposed amendments update the Standard Reference Test Tire. The test tire is used to evaluate tire traction and tire wear and tear through braking and electronic stability control testing. The current requirements allow testing with 14-inch (P195/75R14) radial test tires. The amendment would replace these with 16-inch (P225/60R16) radial test tires.
The amendments would also update the way to test tire performance. The current method is under the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) 1337 - Standard Test Method for Determining Longitudinal Peak Braking Coefficient of Paved Surfaces Using a Standard Reference Test Tire. The update would include adjusting pavement surface friction requirements when testing the 16-inch Standard Reference Test Tire.
These proposed amendments would align with the updates in the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations, Title 49, Part 571, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards that took effect on July 8, 2022.
We welcome your feedback on the proposed updates.
