Privacy Statement

Transport Canada (TC) is responsible for policies and programs related to air, marine, rail, and road modes of transportation. In keeping with its mandate, TC undertakes research to maintain and improve Canada's transportation system. The Canadian Vehicle Use Study (CVUS) is the principal method for collecting information about how Canadians use their motor vehicles.

All personal information you provide related to the CVUS is administered in accordance with the Privacy Act. This means that:

  • No data that could potentially identify a participant will be released;
  • Your name will not be stored in the trip database file;
  • All trip data will be stored on a secure server which will only be accessible to the study team;
  • Only a limited number of authorized officers will have access to the trip data;
  • Only aggregate statistics will be disseminated and no individual records may be released to the public.

The following potentially sensitive information will be collected as part of the study process and protected as explained above:

  • Your name (which we need to post study information to you);
  • Age and gender of the driver(s) of your vehicle;
  • The number of passenger(s) onboard per trip;
  • Trip purpose;
  • The vehicle's geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude);
  • The vehicle's speed.
