Hydrail Railway Transition in Canada - Technological, Operational, Economical, and Societal (TOES) Barriers and Opportunities

Change Energy Services Inc., an environmental consulting company with railway expertise, was commissioned by the Innovation Centre of Transport Canada to explore the technical, operational, economic, and societal factors (TOES) that would affect the viability of converting a diesel driven railway industry in Canada to one powered by hydrogen.

The consultant conducted a high level study that identified the technical, operational, societal, and economic determinates for this transition. The outputs of this study are documented in a report that defines the challenges and the opportunities inherent in this process. The report will serve as a guide that frames the conversion and sequences the necessary changes for government and stakeholders to consider as Canada moves toward a net zero carbon future.

Clean Energy Services Inc. concluded that this hydrogen conversion is technically, operationally, and economically feasible. The time horizon for this outlook are immediate for an interim transition (2030) and long term (2050) for a complete transition.
