Green Shipping Corridors

Overview

Decarbonizing the marine sector is a key part of the Government of Canada’s climate action plan. It requires sector-wide collaboration and innovation to drive down emissions from the entire marine transportation system, including vessels and port operations.

In 2021, Canada signed the Clydebank Declaration, an international agreement to support the establishment of at least six green shipping corridors by the middle of this decade. Defined as zero-emission maritime routes between two or more ports, green shipping corridors will help spur the launch of the next generation of clean ships, deploy green technology at ports, and attract low-emission and low-noise vessels to Canada. In June 2023, the G7 Transport Ministers increased this level of ambition, pledging to support the establishment of at least 14 green shipping corridors in the same timeframe.

Being at the forefront of this pursuit creates new opportunities for Canadians, including the marine transportation industry, clean technology and clean fuel innovators, and Indigenous businesses, among others, contributing to our economic growth and prosperity while protecting our marine environment.
