On or about July 11, 2020, at or around 16:08 LT (local time), the vessels Alanis and Florence Spirit were transiting Welland Canal between Lock 7 and Lock 8, at or around Ramey's bend, off Port Robinson. While steering a course close to the bank, Florence Spirit which was a deep drafted vessel, experienced bank suction while drawing close to the bank on her starboard side. Due to the said hydrodynamic effect, the vessel lost her ability to steer the desired course, veering off to port and came in the way of the approaching vessel Alanis, resulting in a head-on collision. The collision incident caused extensive hull damage to the bow areas of both vessels, without any human injury or loss of life, or damage to the environment.
