  1. These Standards have been established by the Department of Transport and set out;
    1. minimum standards of safety for electrical equipment, installations and appliances; and
    2. the requirements of first and periodic inspections
  2. Where TP 127 does not set out specific requirements in respect of the design, construction, installation or inspection of electrical equipment, these codes, rules and standards should be consulted for guidance as to the appropriate safety standards that are accepted by the marine industry:
    1. the most recent rules of IEEE STD 45 Recommended Practice for Electrical Installations on Shipboard;
    2. the most recent rules of IEC Publication 92 “Electrical Installations in Ships”;
    3. the most recent rules of a recognized Classification Society; or
    4. the most recent rules or codes issued by Societies or Administrations, other than recognized Classification Societies.
  3. For the purpose of these Standards, ships shall be divided into the following groups:
    1. Group I - passenger ships that are certified to make voyages as follows:
      1. foreign,
      2. home-trade, Class I,
      3. home-trade, Class II,
      4. home-trade, Class III, on international voyages,
      5. home-trade, Class III, other than on international voyages, where the length of the ship exceeds 61 metres,
      6. inland waters voyages where the length of the ship exceeds 61 metres, or
      7. minor waters voyages Class I, where the length of the ship exceeds 91.4 metres;
    2. Group 2 - passenger ships certified to make voyages as follows:
      1. home-trade, Class III, other than those referred to in Group I, and where the length of the ship exceeds 18.3 metres but does not exceed 61 meters , or,
      2. inland waters voyages where the length of the ship exceeds 30.5 metres but does not exceed 61 metres, or
      3. minor waters voyages, Class I, where the length of the ship exceeds 30.5 metres but does not exceed 91.4 metres;
    3. Group 3 - passenger ships that are not included in either Group 1 or 2;
    4. Group 4 - Safety Convention cargo ships that carry not more than twelve passengers;
    5. Group 5 - Cargo ships that are not included in Group 4.
    6. Group 5A - Large Fishing Vessels;
    7. Group 5B - Small Fishing Vessels.
  4. The electrical equipment and installations on board ship shall be such that:
    1. the services essential for safety shall be maintained under various emergency conditions; and
    2. the ship and all persons on board are protected against electrical hazards in accordance with the requirements of these Standards.
  5. Part II of this Standard shall only apply to vessels in which the main electrical distribution system is less than a nominal voltage of 50 Volts.
