An aircraft maintenance engineer (AME) licence remains valid until the date shown on the licence. In order for your AME licence to stay valid, you must renew it within the validity period. If your licence has expired, you may apply for it to be re-issued.
The information on this page is a basic overview of the licence renewal process. Detailed AME licensing requirements are outlined in the Airworthiness Manual, Chapter 566. Read this document in order to understand the requirements fully.

Important notice: The AME licence credential (credit card–style licence) has changed. It has been newly designed and issued with:
- better security features
- a 10-year validity period
- no photograph

Before starting a renewal, re-issue or replacement
Before you renew, re-issue or replace your licence, you must:
- complete the Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Licence Application Form (PDF, 710 KB)
- complete a change of address form if you have moved since your last AME licence application
- email or bring the form and proof of payment to your most convenient Transport Canada Service Centre
- follow the other requirements listed below for renewal, re-issue or replacement, depending on what you need to do
Renewing a valid licence
Renew a valid aircraft maintenance engineer (AME) license by submitting:
- the completed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Licence Application Form
- proof of payment of the renewal fee (see Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) Part I, Subpart 4, Schedule IV, item 13)
Re-issue of an expired licence
- My licence has been expired for less than one year
- My licence has been expired for more than one year
- My licence expired before August 1, 1999
My licence has been expired for less than one year
Apply for the re-issue of a license that has been expired for less than one year by submitting:
- the completed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Licence Application Form
- proof of payment of the issuance fee (see CARs Part I, Subpart 4, Schedule IV, item 12)
My licence has been expired for more than one year
To apply for the issuance of a license that has been expired for more than one year:
- submit the completed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Licence Application Form
- successfully complete the AME Regulatory Requirements (REGS) exam (Fee associated with attempt of exam and exam must be completed at a Transport Canada Centre)
- pay the issuance fee (see CARs Part I, Subpart 4, Schedule IV, item 12)
My licence expired before August 1, 1999
If your licence expired before August 1, 1999, you must meet the same requirements as someone applying for the first time. For more information please contact a Transport Canada Centre nearest you.

Replacing a valid licence that has been lost or destroyed
Report and replace a lost or destroyed licence by submitting:
- the completed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Licence Application Form
- a declaration that your licence was “mutilated, lost or destroyed,” in accordance with the Airworthiness Manual Chapter 566
- a licence replacement fee (see CARs Part I, Subpart 4, Schedule I, item 2)

There are three options available which can be used for payment:
- contact Transport Canada National headquarters at 1-800-305-2059
- in person at your most convenient Transport Canada Centre.
- use the Transport Canada Online Payment System and select “Licence or Permit” from the picklist and follow the steps indicated
