Before you can obtain your licence, permit or rating, an exam is necessary to make sure you have the knowledge to fly safely. Your choice of exam will depend on the type of licence, permit, or rating you’re seeking.
Before you book
Eligibility
Each exam has specific requirements that must be met before the exam may be taken, like:
- minimum age
- medical category certificate level
- pilot licence or file number
- minimum number of flight hours
- letter of recommendation or approval from flight training units or Transport Canada inspector
- foreign licence equivalencies
- completion of all necessary prerequisites
You can find more details on these requirements in Standard 421 - Flight Crew Permits, Licences and Ratings - Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs).
You must meet all eligibility criteria before taking the exam. Otherwise you will lose the exam fee.
Prepare for an exam
These resources can help you prepare, study, and practice for your flight crew exam:
- Study and reference guides/Sample examinations – a large collection of learning material by type of examination
- Flight Crew Recency Requirements Self-Paced Study Program
- Accepted electronic computers for flight crew examinations
- List of abbreviations and acronyms that may appear on your exam
Fees and service standards
There are different service standards depending on how you chose to book your exam.
- If you book online, you will receive your confirmation instantly. Exam results are provided immediately after you complete your exam
- If you need Transport Canada to schedule an exam for you, the service standard is 30 business days to book your exam. This doesn’t include the waiting period that could occur before writing your exam
Although we try to accommodate all applicants as soon as possible, the timeframe may vary based on availability and demand. To save time, we recommend contacting a local Authorized Examination Invigilator (AEI) to see if they can administer the exam you need.

How to book
Check with an Authorized Examination Invigilator (AEI) near you to see if they can administer the exam you’re looking to write.
Book an exam with an Authorized Examination Invigilator (AEI)
For Authorized Examination Invigilators
Book an exam at a Transport Canada Centre
If the exam can’t be administered by an AEI, use Transport Canada’s online exam booking tool.
- Have your pilot licence or file number ready. The file number will begin with “5802”
- Once on the exam booking webpage, choose your exam, location and date, provide your contact information and attest that you meet the required eligibility criteria
- Follow the prompts to submit your payment
Once a booking is confirmed through payment, you’ll receive confirmation by email. You will also get an email reminder 3 business days before the exam date.
How to reschedule or cancel an exam
You can reschedule or cancel your exam by using the link in the confirmation email you received when you booked.
To reschedule or cancel an exam, you must submit the request at least 3 business days before the exam date to receive a refund. If you reschedule within at least 3 business days, your payment will automatically be applied towards your rescheduled exam. No credits will be issued.
What to bring to your exam
Without these documents, you won’t be allowed to write the exam and you won’t receive a refund.
Please bring the following documents with you:
- Proof of identity: This is an official document with both a photo and signature. Examples include a passport, an aviation document booklet, an ICAO licence, or a provincial or international driver’s licence
- Proof of medical validity (where required): This can be a Transport Canada-issued medical certificate, a signed/stamped medical page in an Aviation Document Booklet or a “Civil Aviation - Fit Certification” form
- Letter of recommendation/letter of approval (where required): The letter of recommendation from your flight instructor must be dated no more than 60 calendar days before your exam date:
- Note: Students in an integrated flight program require a letter of recommendation
- Candidates converting a foreign licence don’t require a letter of recommendation, but they must show an ICAO licence
- Logbook or Pilot Training Record (PTR): Refer to CAR Standard 421.13(4) for requirements on experience. Please note that with Exemption NCR-033-2022, candidates can take any exam with just 25% of the total flight experience required for a permit, license, or rating
After your exam
Exam results
You’ll receive your results on the same day as your exam. The results will outline whether you passed, partially passed, or failed your exam. Feedback will also be provided on the areas that need improvement.
Information like the names of the exams you have taken, the date they were written, the number of attempts, marks and assessments (passed or failed), are also available through the General Aviation On-Line (GALRO) service portal.
Passed exams
If you received a pass mark on the overall exam and a pass mark in each of the mandatory subject areas, you’ll be evaluated as a successful pass.
Partially passed exams
If you received a pass mark on the overall exam but fail one or more mandatory subject areas, you’ll be evaluated as a partial pass and must rewrite the failed section or sections of the exam.
You must rewrite the failed section(s) within 24 months following the date of the application for a permit, licence or rating. If this date has passed, you’ll need to rewrite the exam in its entirety.
To rewrite a failed section of the exam:
- Rebook the exam. Choose the exam name ending in “Partial”. For example, if you need to rewrite a failed section of the private pilot licence aeroplane exam, select “Private Pilot Licence (Aeroplane) – Partial”
- Choose the section you need to rewrite
- Fill out the online form
- Submit your payment
Failed exams
If you receive a failed mark on the overall exam, you’ll be evaluated as a fail and you’ll need to rewrite the entire exam.
