Marine Safety communicates to seafarers the need for updating qualifications to meet national and international requirements; develops syllabi for seafarer training to be delivered by approved marine institutes; conducts examinations of seafarers; and issues appropriate seafarer certificates.

Vessel operators are to employ properly qualified personnel on their ships.

Canadian seafarers should be aware of and comply with the regulatory requirements specific to their occupations i.e. fishing masters, oil tanker personnel, etc.
