As of October 1, 2024, only zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) that are made in Canada or in countries with which Canada has a free-trade agreement, may be eligible under the Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) Program. For ZEVs manufactured in a country with which Canada doesn’t have a free trade agreement, they may be eligible if they already are in Canada or are in transit to Canada before October 1, 2024. For the purposes of eligibility, “in transit" shall be defined as goods destined for Canada that are under the custody and control of a carrier.

Transportation is the second largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Canada, accounting for a quarter of Canada's total GHG emissions with almost half of these emissions coming from cars and light trucks. One way to reduce the amount of transportation-related GHG emissions is to put more zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) on the road.
A ZEV is a vehicle that has the potential to produce no tailpipe emissions. They can still have a conventional internal combustion engine but must also be able to operate without using it.
We consider the following vehicles to be ZEVs:
- battery-electric
- plug-in hybrid electric
- fuel cell electric
In order to encourage the adoption of ZEVs by Canadians and Canadian businesses, the Government of Canada launched the Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) Program in May 2019. There are many different makes and models of eligible zero-emission vehicles for purchase or lease (over 12 months) that offer eligible consumers with an incentive of up to $5,000. For more information on the iZEV Program, please consult the “Program overview” section below.
