Crashworthiness research
The Crashworthiness Research Division conducts biomechanical and vehicle crashworthiness research to:
- Monitor the effectiveness of existing safety regulations
- Provide the necessary scientific foundation for the development of new motor vehicle safety standards or the amendment of existing standards
- Contribute to the development of crash test dummies
Full-scale vehicle crash tests and test simulations are carried out to evaluate vehicle safety performance for occupants and restraint configurations that are not included in current regulations. Areas of study include the evaluation of restraint technologies in front and rear seating positions, child occupant protection, occupant protection in electric vehicles, transit buses and school buses as well as crash test dummy development.

Human factors and crash avoidance
The Human Factors and Crash Avoidance group conducts applied research on motor vehicle safety. The group evaluates the latest technologies on vehicles from the perspectives of both human performance and engineering. The research has focused on issues like distraction and how drivers use new technology. The group is currently testing the safety of automatic braking technology, automated shuttles and systems for warning truck drivers when there is a cyclist or pedestrian in their blind spot. The group's research helps guide policy and supports the development of motor vehicle safety standards.

Motor carriers
Motor Carriers is focussed on reducing the deaths, injuries and environmental damage caused by the use of commercial vehicles by federally-regulated motor carriers and their drivers. Responsibilities include contributing to the development and implementation of a National Safety Code for Motor Carriers and federal regulations focussed on commercial drivers hours of service and the safety fitness framework for motor carriers. Research is varied and includes studies on safety management systems, speed limiters, hours of service and human factors in the motor carrier industry, such as fatigue management, driver distraction and the health and wellness of commercial vehicle drivers.
