Key Traffic and Volume Statistics

Canada’s air transportation system connects Canada to the world and moves passengers across the country which spans six time zones and covers about 18 million square kilometres.

Canadian airspace is managed by NAV CANADA, a privately run, not-for-profit corporation that owns and operates Canada’s civil air navigation system. It operates air traffic control towers at 42 airports and flight service stations at 55 airports.

Issue No. 6 – March 2023

Water is important!

The public consultation on hydrology and actions to reduce potential impacts during the construction of the Lac-Mégantic rail bypass was held from October 24 to November 25, 2022. During the consultation, many citizens expressed their concerns about the project’s potential impact on well water quantity and quality. Transport Canada is committed to never leave citizens affected by the work without an adequate supply of water for their daily consumption.

Research summary – Evaluation and analysis of substandard lithium-ion batteries by UN 38.3 testing

Background

Lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) are used as lightweight, long-lasting energy storage solutions. LiBs are also classified as a Class 9 dangerous good, and LiBs that are damaged, mishandled, or defective can start a fire. These fires are especially hazardous during air transport, as extinguishing these LiBs fires can be very difficult.;

Research summary – Structural performance of TC-117 tank cars under derailment conditions

Summary

This research evaluated the structural performance of TC-117 tank car designs in derailment scenarios, using a combination of derailment simulations, puncture performance evaluations, and considerations for cold weather material performance. TC-117 tank cars were predicted to have better performance than legacy TC-111 cars under derailment conditions; TC-117J tank cars (compliant with the new specifications) were found to have fewer punctures than several variants of TC-117R tank cars (retrofitted older cars) in all modelled scenarios.
