Research summary – Evaluation and analysis of substandard lithium-ion batteries by UN 38.3 testing

Background

Lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) are used as lightweight, long-lasting energy storage solutions. LiBs are also classified as a Class 9 dangerous good, and LiBs that are damaged, mishandled, or defective can start a fire. These fires are especially hazardous during air transport, as extinguishing these LiBs fires can be very difficult.;

Research summary – Structural performance of TC-117 tank cars under derailment conditions

Summary

This research evaluated the structural performance of TC-117 tank car designs in derailment scenarios, using a combination of derailment simulations, puncture performance evaluations, and considerations for cold weather material performance. TC-117 tank cars were predicted to have better performance than legacy TC-111 cars under derailment conditions; TC-117J tank cars (compliant with the new specifications) were found to have fewer punctures than several variants of TC-117R tank cars (retrofitted older cars) in all modelled scenarios.

Lignin-derived "drop-in" renewable diesel fuels for rail applications

This project has been designed by CanmetENERGY-Ottawa (CE-O, Natural Resources Canada) and its industrial partner CRB Innovations Inc. to assess the feasibility of sing lignin-derived diesel fuels in order to reduce the emissions of non-biogenic greenhouse gases and criteria air contaminants from the rail sector. These “drop-in” biofuels are hydrocarbon-based blending stocks fully compatible with conventional diesel fuels. CE-O and CRB Innovations Inc.
