About the consultation
On April 27, 2016, the Minister of Transport began consulting Canadians, stakeholders, and provinces and territories, and Indigenous groups to hear their views and discuss ideas for a long-term agenda for transportation in Canada.
He focused on five themes:

Safer transportation – How can we keep travellers and communities safe?

Trade corridors to global markets – How can we get the best economic benefits from Canada's key trade routes to global markets?

Green and innovative transportation – How can new technologies help us:
- minimize the impact of transportation on our natural environment?
- make our transportation system safer, more secure and more competitive?

The traveller – How can we provide Canadian travellers with better service as well as more, and more affordable choices?

Waterways, coasts and the North – What improvements to the marine transportation system do you think would balance economic growth, greater environmental protection, and boating safety?
This includes ideas to improve vital connections within and to the North, to advance or unlock its economic growth potential, and:
- improve environmental performance,
- maintain transportation safety, and
- protect the sensitive northern environment.
Why
We wanted Canadians and stakeholders’ feedback to help identify transportation-related priority areas for short- to medium-term action that will support economic growth, create jobs, promote a healthier environment, and strengthen Canada’s competitiveness in global markets.
Who and What
We consulted Canadians, transportation stakeholders, provinces and territories and Indigenous groups.
The feedback we collect through this consultation will contribute to defining how to strengthen Canada's transportation system for the next 20 to 30 years.
When and Where
The Minister led roundtables between May and November 2016 in each of Canada’s major regions to hear different perspectives on key transportation issues and priorities, including those raised in the Canada Transportation Act (CTA) Review Report.
The number of participants selected for the roundtables was limited to encourage a constructive dialogue between the participants and the Minister. It was also important to select the right mix of perspectives to promote a frank, dynamic and helpful discussion.

Along with these roundtables, the Minister participated in English and French Facebook live events on June 16, 2016, to hear the views of Canadians on the topic of "The Passenger".
We collected feedback through an online survey, Transport Canada’s social media accounts and emails, as well as regular correspondence. The consultations ended on September 16, 2016.
Background
On February 25, 2016, the Minister tabled the Report of the Canada Transportation Act Review in Parliament. The report is a comprehensive source of independent advice to Government. This report provides an important source of key input toward developing a new long-term agenda for transportation in Canada.
